Sheldrake Young Naturalist Academy

Monday, July 6, 2020

Our all-new virtual camp experience, Sheldrake Young Naturalist Academy, has been designed specifically for the online format to engage children aged 6-9 in nature adventures that will capture their imagination and stimulate their curiosity about the natural world.

Sheldrake Young Naturalist Academy will meet twice-weekly virtually (Mondays and Thursdays at 9:30 am), focusing on a different nature theme each week through video visits to Sheldrake, hands-on activities, and lots of interaction. Children will be further engaged with independent activities they do between sessions, with time on Thursdays to share outcomes with the group.

Sign up for an individual week or all 6 to stay active in nature through mid-August. A certificate of completion will be sent to all participants.

Week 1 (July 6th and 9th): Creepy Crawlies. This week we’ll meet some of our favorite crawling critters, including slugs, spiders, earthworms, and centipedes. We’ll learn about where they live, what they eat, how they hide, and how they move.

Week 2 (July 13th and 16th): Feathered Friends. These beautiful creatures are all around us, but what do we know about being a bird? This week we’ll become ornithologists and learn all about these fascinating flyers.

Week 3 (July 20th and 23rd): Jurassic Nature. Millions of years ago, dinosaurs roamed the earth. What was the natural world like then? What plants and animals were around then that are still with us now?

Week 4 (July 27th and 30th): Feathered Friends II. The popularity of our first week of Feathered Friends has prompted us to bring back another session. Young ornithologists will discover yet more fascinating facts about birds, play bird games, create bird crafts, and see how bird lovers spend their time.

Week 5 (August 3rd and 6th): Camouflage. While some of us stand out in a crowd, lots of animals are just trying to blend in! We’ll learn about the many ways that animals use camouflage to hunt and hide and see (or not see?!) some amazing examples.

Week 6 (August 10th and 13th): Coastal Critters. This week we’ll meet some of our favorite animals that live at the Long Island Sound beaches, including crabs, snails, and mussels. Get to know their amazing superpowers!

Schedule: Mondays & Thursdays, 9:30-10:30 am

Weekly Fee: $40 for members, $50 for non-members (includes 2 sessions per week)

Space is limited. Register below.
